Three Military Veterans in Twin Pines Cemetery, East
Pana News Palladium
, May 27, 1999:
There's an old military record book to be found in most
Illinois county courthouses. It won't have more recent records, but it has a
vast list-including military burials in abandoned cemeteries.
Until recent years, Pana had a potter's field which was part
of Linwood Cemetery, known as "the city cemetery." Today it is incorporated,
known as Twin Pines Cemetery.
There are three military veterans who served in the 19th
century who are buried there, the Christian County book states:
William Watson
, private, Army, with Millers Mounted V, served in the Black Hawk War (1830's).
He died Sept. 15, 1868.
Otis Wood
, served in Mohawk war (no rank given). he died Jan. 8, 1894.
Josiah Davis
, private in the Army, Company Bd., 54th Illinois Infantry. He died Sept. 1,
1881.
The
Pana News Palladium
would like to do a feature story about these military men who served more than
a century ago. If there are any descendents of any of them who can provide
information, call Millie Meyerholz, feature writer at either (888) 880-NEWS
toll free, or (217) 562-2111.
