My great-grandfather, Pleasant Venters, was a member of the Grove City Lodge #585, but that's all the information I have relating to that organization. Pleasant was the Grove City barber during the fifty year span he lived there (1870-1920). I have a photo of Pleasant and Jennie's Grove City home which couldn't have been very far from the church and cemetery. (In a community that size, everything was close to the church, wasn't it?) Pleasant was the sexton of the cemetery for a number of years, too.
When I visited the cemetery in 1979, I arrived just as the church service was ending and people poured out onto the yard for an annual congregational potluck/picnic. A few new distant cousins came over to meet me when they saw me standing by my ancestors' tombstones. When I went back to the cemetery last July, I almost missed it, as the church and most of the land marks have disappeared.
There is now a large marker near where the church stood, which reads: " Grove City Methodist Church, organized 1833", with a picture of the first church. "1st Church built 1866, destroyed by fire 1957. Church rebuilt in 1957", with a picture of the new church. "Congregation dissolved and church dismantled in 1983".
