Elijah "Daunt" Russell

Minooka Gazette (Grundy County, Illinois)

After thirty-two years officers of Christian County have cleared up, so they think, the mysterious disappearance of Elijah Russell, better known as "Daunt." They have been told that he was murdered Dec. 12, 1867, and they have in their possession the names of the alleged murderers. The person who has furnished this information is George Peifer, who lives north of Middlesworth. Though he was only 6 years old, Peifer says that he saw Russell murdered and that he remembers distinctly all the circumstances surrounding the crime. At the time he was placed in such a position the he could not make known the fact that he was a witness. He says Russell was murdered in the north part of Holland township. The officials refuse to disclose the names of the persons given to them by Peifer. Old residents of the section remember the mysterious disappearance of Russell. He had been a soldier in the civil war. Dec. 12, 1867, he went to Shelbyville, and it was reported that he had drawn considerable money out of the bank. He is known to have had $780 that day. He lived in Drypoint township, and it is said he started home, but no one saw him on the road and his family never heard of him.
