ALLERTON PO established 7-20-1837 (in Sangamon Co, before division). When Christian Co was created (as Dane) 2-15-1839 Allenton was a contender for the county seat, but the location at the new town of Taylorville abt 1 1/2 mi. SE gave Allerton the coup de grace (PO dis 12-14-1839).
ASSUMPTION PO established (changed from Tacusah ) 3-10-1838, active; rural free delivery serves Obed. Named for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mother. Incorporated as a village 3-7-1902. Illinois Central Railroad. Pop. (1960) 1,439.
ASSUMPTION TWP. Formerly Tacusa (Tacusah); named for the village.
